Nathan Larson Announces Field Notes on Avoidance, a Limited First-Edition Collection of Poetry and Photography
Photographer and poet Nathan Larson has announced the release of Field Notes on Avoidance, a limited first-edition book pairing more than 60 original poems with 50 photographs made across North America’s remote roads, coastlines, deserts, mountains, and forgotten edges.
Part poetry collection, part photographic field journal, Field Notes on Avoidance follows the emotional geography of a life in motion. Its pages move from Arctic shores to desert nights, from mountain weather to Gulf Coast quiet, asking what it means to belong to a place, to a memory, to another person, or to the self one keeps trying to outrun.
The book was designed as a tactile object in an increasingly digital world. Printed on premium European papers from Munken and bound with an exposed naked spine and cobalt thread stitching, the first edition carries the feel of a field notebook: raw, open, imperfect, and meant to be held.
Field Notes on Avoidance is a breathtakingly beautiful blend of poetry and photography,” said William Ferris, author and former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities. “Larson shares his intimate encounters with nature… transforming those moments into a religious awakening.”
The limited release includes three cover variants: Flower, Mountain, and Feather. Each version reflects a different emotional register of the collection, from fragility to distance to flight.
Larson’s work is shaped by years spent moving through landscapes, industries, and lives: theatre, photography, wildlife conservation, entrepreneurship, and long stretches of road travel. In Field Notes on Avoidance, those experiences gather into a spare and intimate record of what remains after movement, loss, and nature have had their say.
